POWERMATE new connector

Marseille - (France - EU) - 02/03/2011 - 3B Advice - Section BB, IdB.

Within the results from the 11th call for projects Clusters POWERMATE, labeled Pôle Mer Paca was selected among 83 projects clollaboratifs R & D.

Peter Weiss, project manager - responsible for business Comex says the blog with information on the new connector which was incorporated under the 11th call for proposals of Clusters. "POWERMATE is to develop and qualify a new concept system for make connections or disconnections "wet", that is to say made in immersion, and accepting the high power and medium voltage (> 10kV) produced by renewable energy, while reducing cost and improving reliability .

The idea is to develop an underwater connector "simplified", which, by cons, requires a specific tool for the connection. This architecture is doubly appealing because it removes the complexity of the side of the connector (many installed, maintenance and reliability problems with today's complex systems), and also allows use a connector more suited to high power and high voltages. The concept of this connector has already been a feasibility study and a patent, the proposed project's objective is now to develop a working prototype for applications ENR and test it in conditions close to reality.

We therefore expect to achieve a system that can be implemented from a medium-sized ROV, diver or a boat on the surface. The program includes testing of medium voltage connector under a stream of water and pressure in a box on how to test the various partners. Its ergonomics and maneuverability will be tested by ROV and diver in the pool and final tests at sea "

Thanks to the simplification of the mechanical system Powermate, the price of the connector will drop drastically. Remember that today the price of the connector is nearly 20% of the budget for a submarine power grid and therefore any significant decline in this position will have a positive impact on the cost of the whole. The simplification technique will also provide greater reliability, which in submarine equipment, is a key post.
For this project partners are the COMEX, CNRS, EDF and Subsea Tech. This project is certified
Pole Mer PACA.

PowerBuoy: first certified by Lloyd's Register

Pennington (New Jersey - the USA) - 1/03/11 - 3B Advice - Ocean Power Technology (OPT) has just announced that Lloyd's Register has certified its recovery of wave energy PowerBuoy PB 150. It is a world first, so far no energy recovery has been certified. Thus, an independent organization, which since 1999 validates the offshore platforms and floating structures, confirms that complies PB 150 all rules and regulations of reliability and safety.

Ross Wigg, Lloyd's Register says " Ocean Power Technology is a leading developer of machine recovery of wave energy is for Lloyd's Register. Our long experience in the offshore energy sector is important for the rapid development of offshore renewables and certification PowerBuoy is a significant step in providing products OPT. It shows their commitment to designing safe and effective products to produce clean energy at low cost. "

Charles F. Dunleavy, CEO of OPT, is delighted "Having met the stringent requirements of Lloyds Register for the certification of our PB 150 shows the quality of our engineers and our procedures and our reward 16 years of experience in developing recovery of wave energy to be effective and withstand the marine environm ent . "

Now OPT expects to install as soon as weather conditions permit, the first DB 150 to approximately 33 miles north east coast of Scotland. BP 150 is a second, it, put in water off the Oregon projects are also a presence in Australia, Japan and Europe.

The Power Buoy PB 150 has a unit capacity of 150 hW and may be networked to multiple units.

Back to the Future: Children's Games-Second Act: Part 1

I was attacked last month by the first act, I tackle this new month by the second.
As I said when publishing the first part, the second reveals a little more on the elusive and most importantly, this time, I used dialogue ... well, rather a monologue;)

Good start reading:

suite to the next post!
